It is both striking and somewhat disconcerting that the ’Luther Decade,’ a ten-year series of themes developed by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) as a lead-up to the Jubilee 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation in 2017, includes no theme devoted to the Bible and its impact on Luther or to the influence of biblical interpretation on the Reformation as a whole. While circumcision and the Old Testament laws and ceremonies differ greatly from the means of grace in the New Testament, one thing remains the same: faith alone saves. So today, faith looks to and clings to the promises of God given in the preaching of the Gospel, Absolution, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. Hearing the Word: Teaching the Bible in the Parish and Beyond Dr. David Rhoads Professor of New Testament Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Watch the lecture by David Rhoads; Response by: Diane Jacobson Professor of Old Testament Luther Seminary. Watch the response from Diane Jacobson; 2009. Steed Davidson Assistant Professor of Old.
